What is WOW?

WOW! Do you ever wonder where a word came from? Why we use it? What it truly means? For obvious reasons we had a curiosity about the word WOW. 😉

Wow is a way of exclaiming astonishment, admiration or used as a verb to mean impress or excite greatly or as a noun to mean a sensational success! Wow most certainly expresses a strong feeling no matter it’s use and we hope that excitement extends to our sweeps — WowStakes. Investigating its history we learned that wow dates back to the 1500’s – WOW! Crazy? Right! (Sorry we just couldn’t resist.) Clearly wow is super flexible and easy to use in so many instances. But why? It doesn’t even refer to a specific idea or thing or place or anything really. And like most words in English and so many other languages, it can’t be traced back to Latin origin. It’s thought the popularity and uniformity among different languages of the word wow is due to the way it shows itself through facial expression. It’s a very natural formation for the face to show shock and surprise with a rounded mouth – very clearly presented when someone pronounces the word wow. Say the word out loud for yourself as you read this. [we know you are 😂]. Additionally, the “w” is one of the first and easiest sounds humans make. It’s like we’re born saying wow. Though the origins date back to the 1500’s it’s most widely accepted use to mean amazed or impressed by something was in 1924. Since then, wow has grown in use both in speech and text and emojis 😲.

So we’re ready to expand the “meanings” of WOW even further as we make you all honorary WowSers (WowStakes Sweepers)! We never cease to be amazed or Wow’d by your dedication and we look forward to lots more sweeping with our WowSers for a long time to come!
